A report published by The Atlantic claims that Patel’s actions have raised concerns among officials within both the FBI and the Department of Justice. Some officials reportedly view his behavior as a potential national security risk.

According to the report, Patel’s alleged alcohol use has been a recurring concern. On multiple occasions over the past year, members of his security detail reportedly struggled to wake him, suspecting he was intoxicated. In one instance, officials allegedly requested specialized breaching equipment after being unable to access him behind locked doors.

Sources cited in the report also say that meetings and briefings were sometimes delayed in the early months of Patel’s leadership due to his drinking the night before. These accounts come from current and former officials as well as others familiar with his schedule.

Concerns have grown among some FBI personnel about how Patel might respond in a crisis if he were impaired. These worries reportedly intensified after Donald Trump initiated military action against Iran.

Additionally, the report notes that some officials have questioned whether certain missteps, such as sharing incorrect information related to the investigation into the killing of Charlie Kirk, could be linked to alcohol use.
