Donald Trump is threatening to take action against his fellow Republicans if they don’t get on board to end the Senate filibuster to reopen the government and pass the SAVE Act.
After his day of golfing was ruined by a historic No Kings protest, Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday, “It is time for the Senate Filibuster to END. Those weak and ineffective Republicans Senators that stand in the way of this should be exposed to the public. The Democrats are CRAZY!”
Ending the filibuster would eliminate the 60-vote threshold required to pass most legislation and would allow the majority Republican majority to pass bills with a “simple majority” of just 51 votes. Doing so would potentially clear the way for Republicans to immediately pass Trump’s SAVE America Act, legislation designed to disenfranchise voters ahead of the 2026 midterms.
The SAVE Act would require all voters to provide, documentary proof of citizenship – a passport or birth certificate (with a photo ID) in most cases – anytime they register or update their registration. A Real ID would not be acceptable (it is only proof of lawful residence, not citizenship), nor would military IDs, without accompanying documentation like a birth certificate. In addition, the bill contemplates that proof of citizenship be presented in person, with no clear allowance for online submission or mailing copies.
As a result of these onerous requirements, tens of millions of people could be prevented from registering or updating their registration. According to research from the Brennan Center for Justice, over 21 million voting-eligible citizens do not have ready access to documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.
After 8 million Americans marched in the streets for No Kings yesterday, Donald Trump is clearly rattled and looking for a way to stop the people power surging across the country right now.
In total, Democrats have gained 12 legislative seats nationwide through special elections since January 2025, while Republicans have gained no seats. If that keeps up, Trump can kiss his congressional majority goodbye.
