Americans' most basic rights are under attack

SCOTUS is hearing arguments in Louisiana v. Callais to MAJORLY restrict the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — potentially allowing lawmakers to not consider race while redistricting, which could lead to the silencing of minority voices and votes.

The VRA prohibits racial discrimination in voting and was created to fight back against Jim Crow-era voting laws, but it might be cut back to allow Republicans to gerrymander districts legally and take away multiple Democratic strongholds in red states.

This lawsuit is specifically about whether or not one district in Louisiana can take action to ensure Black voices aren’t hidden away by strategically-drawn districts — Black Louisianans sued because Louisiana only has one district drawn in a way that could elect a Black member of Congress, even though Black people make up a third of Louisiana’s population. A court found that the drawing of the districts probably violated the VRA, so Louisiana made a second majority-Black district — and white people sued, saying that race couldn’t be considered in redistricting.

Now, it’s at the Supreme Court and the case’s impacts will be felt all over the country, especially as gerrymandering has become a major topic in the space recently. Stacey Abrams put it very clearly in an interview with The Atlantic —

“We will not have free and fair elections in this country going forward if they are permitted to strike down the Voting Rights Act, because what you are saying is that for the vast majority of people of color in this country, you will not be permitted to have access to a truly representative democracy,” she said.

Donald Trump has been chipping away at the basic rights afforded to every American since he took office — from challenging birthright citizenship (which is literally in the Constitution) to attacking First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and press. I hope SCOTUS remembers they don’t serve a person, they serve the people, and they uphold the VRA.
