We Must Boycott CBS
Trump keeps attacking free speech – we can't let him get away with it.
Yesterday, CBS News proved they can’t fight back against a corrupt administration, abruptly pulling a segment that would have exposed the brutal conditions that Donald Trump forced Venezuelan men to experience.
The Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, or CECOT, in El Salvador, is a maximum-security prison that reportedly abuses and tortures inmates, and refuses to let them talk to lawyers or family members. Sunday’s episode of “60 Minutes” was titled “Inside CECOT,” and was a segment on the Venezuelan men that Trump deported and their experiences in the prison — but CBS’s Editor in Chief Bari Weiss pulled it at the last moment.
Sharyn Alfonsi, the segment’s correspondent, sent an email to CBS colleagues saying that Weiss “spiked” the story and that it was screened five times and already cleared by CBS and their attorneys.
In her email, she also wrote, “If the administration’s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a ‘kill switch’ for any reporting they find inconvenient” — a concept that sounds really similar to censorship.
The far right is constantly complaining that their ideas are censored and that they’re the victims of oppression, but really, it’s the White House and their allies that are doing the suppressing, and CBS just publicly handed them the tools they need to do just that.
Trump has already tried to deport people for their pro-Palestine activism, gotten Jimmy Kimmel temporarily fired, removed parts of the Epstein files that included photos of Trump after they were already released to the public (and redacted the rest of them), so blocking a video exposing the Trump admin’s cruelty from being released isn’t a standalone threat to free speech — it’s the latest in a variety of assaults on the Constitution.
It’s clear that Trump and his allies are working very hard to create a reality that does not exist that absolves them of their many crimes — we can’t let that happen. We need everyone to know about his censorship; don’t stop calling it out.
